I just finished The Emperor's Children by Claire Messud which was an interesting read and would certainly give you a lot to talk about. You can check out the review in the NY Times.
I'm in the midst of reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver. It makes you re-evaluate how you eat and where it comes from. A great read for the times we're in right now! (It's a great book on CD too, if you have regular time in the car!)
You may have picked a book already...but I just finished "Life in the Time of Butterflies" by Julia Alvarez. A great read. It's a historical fiction, set in the Dominican Republic.
